Calling Cuts and Relays

New In-Motion animated QuickTime version now available for WebBall Team Players. Please sign in or join.

Judging the direction of hits, the alignment of cut-off fielders, and the speed of runners - all at the same time - is a talent learned over time usually during games. This helps speed up the learning curve.

RED lines are hits (dashed) and throws.

BLUE lines are fielder movement.

BLACK lines are approximate runners paths.

Set Up

The catcher is the field captain - not only before the pitch but also once the ball is in play.

While everyone on the team can be involved in this, it's focus is on the catcher and the infielders who must listen to him.

Coach sets up for hitting out in front of the play to stay clear of runners and throws.

As shown, there is one runner starting from 2nd and one from home. In actuality, you should have at least 2 or possibly 3 runners at each position.
